NHI to open Demonstration Plant for Cellulosic Bioethanol in Japan

A new cellulosic bioethanol demonstration plant will be Japan's first biofuel production facility capable of continuous preprocessing, Japan Corp reported. The new facility -- located in Hyogo Prefecture -- will produce ethanol for automobile fuel from soft cellulose vegetating, such as rice and wheat straw. The plant will use new technologies it has developed combining hydrothermal treatment and enzymatic saccharification to process the feedstock. The plant was construction by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Hakutsuru Sake brewing Co., Ltd and Kansai Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd.
